Torch-on Membrane

Torch-on membrane has been one of the most successful waterproofing products for the protection of flat roofs, balconies and even subterranean walls.

It has been used in South Africa for the past 30-40 years and comes in various thicknesses and finishes. However, what is important is the quality of product. Our climatic conditions are almost unique with extreme Ultra Violet attack coupled with temperature variations ranging from -15ºC to 50ºC. For this reason it is vital that the membranes used are Atactic-Polypropylene (APP) Modified Bituminous Membrane which have been thoroughly tested by a reputable industry body, such as the European Board of Agréments, with a proven track record in this country.

Safeguard uses only products supplied by Vetroasfalto, an Italian manufacturer, whose products have been used in this country over several decades.

The range of products includes:

  • Vetroasfalto Systema 4mm APP Plain finish

  • Vetroasfalto Systema 3mm APP Plain finish

  • Vetroasfalto Systema 3mm APP Mineral Chip finish – Green, Grey, Red

  • Vetroasfalto SAPPI 4mm APP Plain

  • Vetroasfalto SAPPI Ala 4mm APP Plain

These products, if properly installed by one of our approved applicators and regularly re-painted with Bitumen Aluminium Paint, have a guaranteed life of 10 years and should last even longer.

Acryl Fibre

Safeguard specialise in Acryl Fibre is a fibre re-inforced waterproof acrylic which serves much the same purpose as a waterproof acrylic with a membrane.

Typically Acryl Fibre is used to waterproof:

  • All types of flashings

  • Parapet walls

  • Ridge caps and soffitts

  • Window sills

Bitumen Aluminium Paint

Bitumen Aluminium Paint is a solvent-based reflective top coating for all bitumen-based waterproofing products.

Whilst the product is UV resistant it does require maintenance every 2-3 years to prevent deterioration of the underlying surface.

Application is by brush, roller or spray. Surfaces must be thoroughly clean and dry prior to application.

Torch-on Membrane should be allowed to “cure” for several days before applying Bitumen Aluminium Paint. Failure to do so can cause “spider-cracking” of the paint surface and a bronze rather than a silver finish.

Coverage is approximately 7 sq m per litre. Two coats are recommended.”

Safeguard SWS Waterproof System

The Safeguard Waterproofing System (SWS) - is a multi-coat waterproofing system that is both durable and versatile.

The main coating material, SWS Slurry, is a cement-based, plastic modified powder which is mixed with water and applied to the substrate by brush, spray or trowel.

It sets to form a bond with the masonry substrate, creating an impervoius barrier to the movement of water.

Excellent adhesion is ensured by the addition of a specially formulated additive called Bondaid Plus. This also improves the slurry coat's flexibility and strength, as well as making it easier to apply. It is, of course, vital to prepare the substrate first, the application of SWS Salt Neutralisers being an important part of the process. These prevent migration of damaging chlorides, nitrates and sulphates into the coating. Note: where the substrate is of poor quality or there are high levels of salt contamination, consideration should be given to the use of the CDM membrane system.

Before slurry coats are laid down, it may be necessary to relieve water pressure, and this can be done by inserting weep tubes into the substrate. Later these would be filled with SWS Rapid Setting Plug, which jointly expands slightly as it sets. For stress points such as floor/wall junctions, which represent potential weak spots, there is SWS Fillet Seal, a cement-based material that is rapid curing and non-shrink.

SWS systems are able to bridge hairline cracks and can be applied to either the positive or negative side of the substrate. They comprise materials that are non-toxic, non-corrosive and resistant to UV light.

The SWS system is a very popular method of waterproofing cellars and basements. However, it is also often used in less demanding situations, such as preventing damp through soil-retaining walls. In these situatons, the fillet seal, shown on the diagram, can usually be omitted.

The SWS system is also used for waterproofing reservoirs..
